Poem #323

Ellery Littleton

I know something about you.
And I’ll tell you what it is
in just a moment.
It’s something very important.
Very big. Very deep. Very private.
It’s based on my complete faith
in my intuition, which never fails me
in these matters. You will be tempted
to brush aside this observation of mine,
this truth about you. Don’t just dismiss
it as shallow sentimental nonsense;
take a moment and look below the
surface; go for the story beneath
the story; stay open; put your inner
critic on hold.

Are you ready? Okay … here it is.
The truth is, you’re amazing!
No, I mean truly! Trust me on this.
Don’t move away; come back here.
I’m speaking from the heart.
I’m saying this because it’s way
overdue; I need to say it and you
need to hear it. Look me right in
the eye, if you can.

You’re magical! You’re so much fun
to be with! I’ve seen you at your best,
absolutely dazzling. You know this
about yourself, don’t you. Yes, you do.
In your secret heart, you know how
great it is to be you, to be with you;
what fabulous company you are.
You’ve got so much love in you;
you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re
sensitive, generous and kind.
You’re a warm and passionate lover.

But you’ve denied it for so long
you’ve almost lost it. And you want
somebody to see this in you,
really see this. And I have.
Just a glimpse was all I needed.
